Digital State Geologic Maps

Version 1.00

This web page was developed by the USGS Mineral Resources Program's National Surveys and Analysis Projects (NSA) (http://minerals.usgs.gov/news/newsletter/v1n1/A3.html) to support its State Geologic Map Compilation activity to create a small-scale integrated bedrock-oriented geologic map database of the U.S. based on digital state geologic maps. The purpose of this page is to share information about and expedite access to digital state geologic maps. Information is presented in three categories:

  • DIGITAL MAP - information on obtaining the digital version of the state geologic map,
  • SOURCE MAP - reference to paper map digitized to create the digital version of the map or if no digital cover is available the current state map,
  • COMMENTS - comments in regards to other information about the availability of state level digital maps or subjects of related interest.

The user is advised to check restrictions on use of data downloaded or acquired from these sources.

The USGS does not guarantee the accuracy of outside link content and is providing these links for information purposes only.

Alaska

Digital Map:

Source Map:

Beikman, H.M., 1980, Geologic Map of Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey, 2 sheets, 1:2,500,000 scale.

Comments:

The Beikman digital map cited above has serious attribution and accuracy problems (user beware).

No detailed geologic map exists for Alaska. The state is presently being compiled by the NSA as a set of 1:250,000 scale digital covers as an integrated database (contact: Ric Wilson, fwilson). This compilation when complete will be used to compile a new state geologic map.

Two products are available from this work:

  • Wilson, F.H., Dover, J.H., Bradley, D.C., Weber, F.R., Bundtzen, T.K., and Haeussler, P.J., 1998, Geologic map of Central (Interior) Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 98-133, 3 sheets, scale 1:500,000 (CD) - also available online: http://geopubs.wr.usgs.gov/open-file/of98-133-a/
  • Frederic H. Wilson, Robert L. Detterman, and Gregory Dubois, 1999, Digital Data for the Geologic Framework of the Alaska Peninsula, Southwest Alaska, and the Alaska Peninsula Terrane: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-317: http://geopubs.wr.usgs.gov/open-file/of99-317/

Surficial geology maps for Alaska can be found at: http://www.nps.gov/akso/gis/

  • D.M. Hirschberg and G.S. Pitts, 2000, Digital Geologic Map of Arizona: A Digital Database Derived from the 1983 printing of the Wilson, Moore, and Cooper 1:500,000-scale map: http://geopubs.wr.usgs.gov/open-file/of00-409/

Source Maps:

S.M. Richard, S.J. Reynolds, J.E. Spencer, and P.A. Pearthree, compilers, 2000, Geologic map of Arizona, Arizona Geological Survey Map M35, 1:1,000,000 scale. Revision of original 1988 map (AGS Map 26). (note the Richard et al map does not have a paper source and was compiled digitally)

Wilson, E. D., Moore, R. T., and Cooper, J. R., 1969, Geologic map of Arizona: U.S. Geological Survey, 1 sheet, 1:500,000 scale. Note - map was reprinted in 1977, 1981, and 1983. Apparently 1983 version has some modifications (see OFR 00-409 metadata file).

Vermont

Source Map:

Doll, C.G., Cady, W.M., Thompson Jr., J.B., and Billings, M.P., 1961, Centennial Geologic Map of Vermont: State of Vermont, scale 1:250,000.

Comments:

The above "bedrock" geology cover is based on the above source map, but is a simplified version which has been reattributed into nine bedrock lithologic classes developed as part of a project to analyze landscape diversity across Vermont. See associated metadata file available at above site for details. The simplification process involved dissolving polygons to simplify the map and original unit attribution was not retained.

The Vermont Geological Survey and the USGS are cooperatively preparing a new geologic map of Vermont (see: http://geology.er.usgs.gov/eespteam/vtp/vermont.html).
