Strategic Planning and Funding

MRP is funded annually through the Congressional appropriations process. Projects supported by MRP provide a balance between basic and applied research that will provide world-class earth science research and data for a wide range of customers. The MRP strategic plan is part of the USGS Energy and Minerals Science Strategy. Since 2004, MRP has used a part of its appropriated funding for the Mineral Resources External Research Program (MRERP), a grant and/or cooperative agreement opportunity to any individual who has the ability to conduct research consistent with MRP goals and who is not employed by a Federal agency.
