In response to the growing demand for information on the global mineral-resource base, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) completed assessments for undiscovered resources of porphyry and sediment-hosted copper, platinum-group elements, and potash.

Understanding the global distribution of nonfuel mineral resources

The USGS conducts national and global assessments of renewable and nonrenewable resources to support decision making. Mineral resource assessments provide a synthesis of available information about where mineral deposits are known and suspected in the Earth’s crust, what commodities may be present, and amounts of undiscovered resources.

After completing the first quantitative national mineral resource assessment in the 1990s, the USGS conducted a feasibility study to determine whether a global assessment was possible with current knowledge and technology. That study demonstrated that the work would be possible, if conducted in partnership with geological surveys and other interested organizations worldwide. The Global Mineral Resource Assessment Project started in 2002 as a cooperative international effort to assess the world’s undiscovered nonfuel mineral resources.

The purposes of the study were to provide

  • the first globally consistent and comprehensive analysis of selected types of undiscovered nonfuel mineral resources, and
  • all nations with a regional and global context for evaluating their mineral resources, planning for new mineral exploration and anticipating the economic, environmental, and social impacts of mineral development, and making land use decisions.

The results of this global project are reported in the form of

  • maps showing regions in which it is likely that there are undiscovered resources of copper, platinum-group elements (PGE), and potash,
  • compilations of known deposits of these important commodities,
  • descriptions of the characteristics of the known deposits, and
  • estimates of the probable amounts of undiscovered copper, PGEs, and potash to depths of 1 to 3 kilometers below the Earth’s surface.

The products of this assessment can be used as the foundation for

  • potential mineral supply/sustainable mineral supply and development,
  • environmental planning/anticipate potential impacts,
  • land use planning/biodiversity, land-use conflicts, and
  • economic planning/jobs, poverty reduction, economic development.

Results

The results of this international project are being published in formats intended to meet the needs of the wide variety of users. Formal technical reports of assessment results provide information and tools with which technical audiences can review the data used to prepare the assessments, analyze the results for technical accuracy, and, if they wish, conduct their own assessments. Papers describing the methodologies behind the assessments are provided for users who need to understand the details of the analyses, or who wish to develop their own analytical methods. Digital data sets are made available for users of geographic information systems who wish to combine USGS data with data from other sources, or who are interested in conducting additional spatial analyses. Two groups of summary reports, reviews prepared in the early stages of the global assessment and analyses prepared at the conclusion of the work, are expected to meet the needs of a range of policy makers, with or without expertise in mineral deposits.

In order to complete a global mineral resource assessment, probabilistic assessments were conducted for geologic features with potential for undiscovered resources. This publication series provides the assessment results for each study area and the supporting technical data.

Reviews of the geology and nonfuel mineral deposits of the world

The world's distribution of known nonfuel mineral deposits and their resources is summarized in five reports covering the United States; Latin America and Canada; Asia and the Pacific; Europe and northern central Asia; and Africa and the Middle East. These regional reports are designed to inform the non-earth scientist about the regional locations and general geologic setting of known deposits of major nonfuel mineral commodities.

Proceedings for a workshop on deposit modeling, mineral resource assessment, and their role in sustainable development

Eighteen papers were published as the proceedings of a workshop on "Deposit Modeling, Mineral Resource Assessment, and Their Role in Sustainable Development". The purpose of the workshop was to review the state-of-the-art in mineral deposit modeling and resource assessment and to examine the role of global assessments of nonfuel mineral resources in sustainable development.

The workshop was held at the 31st International Geological Congress (IGC) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on August 18–19, 2000 and was sponsored by the U.S. Geological Survey and the former Deposit Modeling Program of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Cooperators

The global mineral resource assessment was conducted by teams of USGS scientists working with international cooperators. Cooperators included representatives of other geological surveys, academic and research organizations, the minerals industry, and consultants. Cooperators participated in the assessment in a variety of different ways, such as providing data (geologic maps, mineral occurrence databases, geophysical and geochemical data); expertise in the geology, tectonics, or metallogeny of an area; information on known mineral deposits and exploration methods and activity; hosting or participating in assessment workshops; and contributing to reports.

GMRAP workshops

A series of assessment workshops were held, including on-site workshops with cooperators in the U.S. and abroad, as well as workshops conducted via Web conferences. Workshops and special symposia were held in conjunction with international meetings, such as the International Geological Congress and the Annual Meeting of Geological Society of America. Assessment methods training workshops were held with the Geological Surveys of Finland (GTK) and Denmark and Greenland (GEUS).
