Eastern Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center
"ASTER is a cooperative effort between NASA and Japan's Ministry of Economy Trade and Industry (METI), with the collaboration of scientific and industry organizations in both countries. The ASTER instrument provides the next generation in remote sensing imaging capabilities compared with the older Landsat Thematic Mapper, and Japan's JERS-1 OPS scanner." (from ASTER mission home page:http://asterweb.jpl.nasa.gov/mission.asp**; ASTER overview at https://lpdaac.usgs.gov/lpdaac/products/aster_overview**)
USGS is working with NASA to develop data acquisition and data management plans. Efforts also include developing and maintaining a spectral library to use in interpreting ASTER data; and developing, testing, and evaluating lithologic mapping methods using simulated ASTER data and ASTER data that are available from test sites.
