The regional National Surveys and Analysis projects worked together to define common goals, set priorities, and ensure that products conformed to consistent standards and protocols. Previously collected data were reviewed for quality, consistency, and sample distribution, and areas needing new data collection were determined. Research was targeted in areas that would help establish and explain the regional frameworks within which tectonic, mineral deposit modeling, mineral exploration, land-use analysis, and other studies operate.
Tasks for Alaska and Hawaii
Geology
Digitization of all available 1:250,000-scale geologic quadrangle maps for Alaska and Hawaii.
Compilation of new geologic maps for areas where existing maps were inadequate or obsolete, such as the Aleutian Islands, northern Alaska Peninsula, and Kodiak Islands; Yukon-Koyukuk Basin; southern Brooks Range and Yukon Flats; Eagle quadrangle along the Alaska-Yukon border; Wrangell-St. Elias National Park; and Southeast Alaska.
Collection of geochemical samples to fill in data gaps as resources are available.
Compilation of Geochemical Atlas of Alaska.
Geophysics
Compilation, synthesis, and regional analysis of statewide geophysical information including aeromagnetics, gravity, aeroradiometrics, and electrical data.
Preparation of regional geologic framework for interpretation of the geophysical data.
